2 Things To Keep In Mind When Looking At Relocation Packages

Posted on

Getting a new job can be really exciting. Getting a new job across the country is still exciting, but trying to figure out all the logistics is a little less exciting and a little more daunting. However, many jobs will offer some help in the form of a benefits package. There are things that you can do that will make sure that your relocation benefits package works best for you.

Figure Out Your Expenses

Before you do anything, you are going to need to figure out what your expenses are. You will want to figure out how much it will cost for a company to do the move for you as well as how much it will cost you to do it on your own. Make sure that you go over your figuring carefully, because you want to make sure that you added in everything possible, like how much it will cost for gas, including an extra percentage for emergencies, hotel costs, food costs, and tolls. When you are finished, look at your projected moving expenses and what your company is offering so that you can see if it covers everything you need.

Make Sure to Negotiate

Most companies will have some room for negotiation. That means that you can talk to them about getting the things what will work best for you. If you are going to negotiate with your company over your moving benefits, it's important to remember that it isn't a situation where you are going in to get everything that you want. A negotiation is basically a place where each party is going to get something they want while having to give up other things. Both sides may not be 100% happy at the end of the process, but both of you should be satisfied with what the negotiation looks like. With that in mind, figure out what you absolutely, positively need to have and aren't willing to give in on, what you would really like to have but are willing to give up on, and things that are just extras that would be super great to have, but you don't need.

When you go into your negotiation, be prepared. Show what your expenses are going to be and provide justification of why you need what you are asking for. You are always more likely to get what you want if you show a good basis as to why you need it. You can always start by asking for more than what you need and then haggle it down until you get what you were looking for in the first place. If you start with what you need, you are at risk of getting less than that.

Getting a new job and moving across country can be exciting. Talk to your company about relocation moving services.
